Heterogeneous Flow in Interstellar Medium and Star Formation

چکیده
Almost all interstellar objects contain inherent inhomogeneity. The inhomogeneity can manifest in many different ways, such as the uneven matter distribution in a molecular cloud, or the tangled magnetic field distribution in a Bok globule. The dynamics of interstellar objects is thus often governed by the interaction between astrophysical flows or shocks such as supernova blast waves with inhomogeneous objects. We categorize such interactions as “heterogeneous flows” in general since many of their behaviors can be attributed to the heterogeneous nature of the underlying objects. At the computational physics group of the University of Rochester, we develop the highly sophisticated numerical tool AstroBEAR to study the physics of heterogeneous flows. One such problem is the heat conduction through interfaces between hot and cold magnetized plasmas. Through simulations, we find a simple mathematical relation for the rate of heat conduction as a function of the initial ratio of ordered to tangled field across the

On the relation between the Schmidt and Kennicutt-Schmidt star formation laws and its implications for numerical simulations
When averaged over large scales, star formation in galaxies is observed to follow the empirical Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) law for surface densities above a constant threshold. While the observed law involves surface densities, theoretical models and simulations generally work with volume density laws (i.e. Schmidt laws). We derive analytic relations between star formation laws expressed in terms o...
متن کاملStar Formation in the LMC: Gravitational Instability and Dynamical Triggering
Evidence for triggered star formation is difficult to establish because energy feedback from massive stars tend to erase the interstellar conditions that led to the star formation. Young stellar objects (YSOs) mark sites of current star formation whose ambient conditions have not been significantly altered. Spitzer observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) effectively reveal massive YSOs...
متن کاملSolute Transport for Pulse Type Input Point Source along Temporally and Spatially Dependent Flow
In the present study, analytical solutions are obtained for two-dimensional advection dispersion equation for conservative solute transport in a semi-infinite heterogeneous porous medium with pulse type input point source of uniform nature. The change in dispersion parameter due to heterogeneity is considered as linear multiple of spatially dependent function and seepage velocity whereas seepag...
متن کاملStar Formation and Metal Production in the Early Universe
Recent advances in our understanding of star formation and the associated production of heavy elements at high redshift are reviewed. First, the host galaxies of star-formation regions at redshift 2 – 4 are characterized, and a comparison with their local counterparts is made. Then the properties of the stellar content in these objects are summarized. A major theme is the interaction and feedba...
متن کاملBondi-hoyle-lyttleton Accretion onto a Protoplanetary Disk
Young stellar systems orbiting in the potential of their birth cluster can accrete from the dense molecular interstellar medium during the period between the star’s birth and the dispersal of the cluster’s gas. Over this time, which may span several Myr, the amount of material accreted can rival the amount in the initial protoplanetary disk; the potential importance of this ‘tail-end’ accretion...
